Dallas Smith
Thursday night at Edmonton’s Midway Music Hall was a full-on Canadian rock throwback as Default brought The Fallout back to life for its 25th Anniversary Tour. The crowd was lined up around the block long before the doors were set to open.
Wide Mouth Mason
Opening the show was Saskatoon blues-rock favourites Wide Mouth Mason kicking the night into gear. With Shaun Verreault on vocals, guitar and three-slide lap steel and Safwan Javed on drums and percussion, they delivered the kind of tight, blues-soaked performance that has kept the duo on Canadian stages for three decades. Their catalogue includes fan favourites such as “Why,” “Smile,” “This Mourning” and “Companion (Lay Me Down)."
Jeremy Hora
Then it was time for Default to turn the clock back to 2001. Frontman Dallas Smith, guitarist Jeremy Hora, bassist Dave Benedict and drummer Danny Craig hit the stage celebrating 25 years of The Fallout—the multi-platinum debut that launched the band with rock-radio staples including “Wasting My Time,” “Deny” and “Slow Me Down.” The album also helped earn Default the 2002 JUNO Award for Best New Group.
For longtime fans, it was a chance to reconnect with the soundtrack of the early-2000s Canadian rock explosion, while a new generation got to experience those songs at full volume. And the anniversary celebration isn't stopping in Edmonton. The tour continues with Vancouver on October 3rd and Abbotsford on October 4th. Two Canadian rock acts. One legendary album. Twenty-five years of The Fallout. Thursday night at Midway proved that some Canadian rock songs never really leave the playlist—they just get louder.
Wish You Were There Concerts. Music. Memories.
